Luis Salom, currently second in the championship standings after his win in Aragon, his second victory of 2012, has now been officially announced at Red Bull KTM for the 2013 season, effectively replacing departing Sandro Cortese, who moves to the new Intact GP team(Intact are one of his current sponsors) and up to Moto2 next year.
Salom, who currently rides for RW Racing GPon a Kalex KTM had originally provisionally moved to Team Switzerland before they were not awarded a spot on the grid. Team manager Aki Ajo is certain he has picked the right man for the job in what looks to be a closely fought 2013 season with early favourites for next years title including Jonas Folger (Mapfre Aspar) and Maverick Vinales (Blusens Avintia):
“It was clear for me already at quite early stage in the summer who is that kind of rider who is able to fight for the victories next season”, says team leader Aki Ajo, “Luis is the one. He has an experience, good pace and he has shown his maturity and rationality as a rider when it comes to the tough fights on the last laps.”
The 21 year old Spanish hopeful is keen to start working for his new team and enjoy the performance perks that come from being in a high profile, well sponsored team:
“Having a chance to be a part of the Red Bull KTM Ajo team is a dream come true for me, this is also important for my family and all the people who work with me. Competing in factory team makes me calmer and I am more confident what comes to the future. I am grateful for Aki, Red Bull and KTM for the possibility they have given me. I truly am ready to start fighting in my new team starting from the first tests until the last race.”
Salom has been on the podium in the last four GP’s and has enjoyed eight rostrom appearances so far this year .On top of his Indianapolis and Aragon wins he has also been second twice. He was eighth in the final year of 125cc racing and finished runner up in the 2008 Red Bull Rookies Championship.
