RW Racing’s Luis Salom will arrive at Sepang with a five place grid penalty as Race Direction decided post-race to hand out the sanction for his part in the manic last lap action in Motegi.
Winner of two grand prix this season, Salom was keen to add to his tally and his rash move when trying to take first from fourth took out then leader Jonas Folger in the process, the Aspar man visibly angry with the Spanish rider when the two met in the gravel. It was announced by banner on screen at the time that the move was to be investigated, but was then overshadowed by the events that unfolded over the rest of the lap, with Sandro Cortese’s outbusts on the warm up lap and in the garage and subsequent Twitter apology grabbing the most attention.
Salom confirmed the decision on his official web page, luissalom39.com, with the following statement:
“It’s a shame and I feel so bad for Jonas Folger, but it was not on purpose. I was fighting for victory and made a mistake. It was a racing incident. I’m back to third in the championship standings. That’s the worst. “
Team manager Johan Stigefelt looked for positives among the bad news:
“This is a very bad result for the team, but we have to keep our heads high. Aside from the race we had a good weekend and we have to regain that spirit for Malaysia, the next race. Luckily Luis is not hurt, because we have three races in a row with little time to recover. “
It is a move that will no doubt raise eyebrows among those who follow the sport after Marquez was not penalised for his practice ‘racing incident’- his third serious sanction-worthy move of the season- on Finnish Marc VDS rider Mika Kallio.
Salom parts ways with the team at the end of the season and will race for Red Bull KTM Ajo in 2013. RW Racing will be running Czech rider Jakub Kornfeil next year.
