Despite the 2013 seats only just being settled, it appears Yamaha are already thinking of the future and aiming to get Pol Espargaro affiliated to their factory with a pre-contract for the 2014 season.

According to, Yamaha managing director Lin Jarvis is keen to secure the talents of last season’s Moto2 runner-up Espargaro and wishes to snap him up before the competition. This type of ‘pre-contract’ was previously used by Yamaha to secure the talents of Jorge Lorenzo back in 2006 before he signed his official contract in Laguna Seca in 2007.

Another option for the team would be to further use the Tech3 squad as a training ground where Moto2 graduate Bradley Smith will be learning his craft this year, while fellow Brit Cal Crutchlow only signed a one year deal after exploring his options.
