As testing kicks of for the Moto2 and Moto3 classes Maverick Vinales carried on from the form he showed at the private KTM test, posting the fastest time of the day at the Ricardo Tormo circuit, Valencia.
Vinales topped the timesheets for the first official day of testing for the Moto3 class in 2013 on his KTM JHK Laglisse machine posting a lap time of 1m 40.715. The young Spaniard was the only rider to lap under 1m41 and was faster than Jonas Folger’s pole position time for Aspar at the Valencia round last season.
Luis Salom was second fastest despite a small crash for the Red Bull KTM Factory team, with last seasons top rookie Alex Rins third quickest aboard the Estrella Galicia.
The fastest non-Spanish rider was Zulfahmi Khairuddin the Malaysian rider placed his Factory KTM fourth in the finalised times, just over a second off Vinales pace.
Jonas Folger impressed last year when he moved to the Mapfre Aspar team midway through the season, remaining with the team for 2013 after impressing last season, the German rider, who became a father in December, kicks off testing fifth fastest.
Romano Fenati also proved to have a solid pace off the back of his rookie season and was sixth quickest for San Carlo Team Italia.
Aiming to break out of the shadows of their more famous relatives this season Alex Marquez, younger brother of MotoGP rookie Marc, was tenth on day one for Estrella Galicia with whom he had several wild-card rides last year, while Issac Vinales, cousin to Maverick, was 11th at his new team Bimbo Ongetta Centro Seta.
Female rider and team mate to Vinales Ana Carrasco had a storming debut finishing the day 12th fastest ahead of many familiar names while reportedly only running a customer bike for 2013.
British rider Danny Webb was 15th after moving from Mahindra to Ambrogio Racing, fellow countryman John McPhee was 24th for Caretta.
