Malaysian fan favourite Zulfahmi Khairrudin still carrying wrist injury he picked up at the 2012 Catalan grand prix, which he then aggravated it in pre-season testing.
Red Bull KTM Ajo rider Khairuddin, who worked his way through the field in the opening round at Qatar to finish sixth form an eleventh place start , has not spoken of any discomfort but will undergo further checks later this week.
Datuk Razlan Razali, the chief executive of the Sepang International Circuit reported that “Though Fahmi did not complain about the wrist, we are not taking anything for granted, as part of his management team, we have advised him to have further checks with ISN this Friday.”
Also carrying a pre-season injury is title favourite Maverick Vinales who rode the Losail circuit on painkillers to finish second for Team Calvo after beating Alex Rins in a photo finish.
The Spaniard, who is missing the tip of his right hand’s ring finger after crasing his KTM at the final test at Jerez last month beat the odds to compete in Qatar at all and is confident for the next round, the inaugural Austin grand prix at the Circuit of the Americas, after discovering the pain subsided the more he used in in race conditions.
Speaking at the Doha track Vinales revealed : “I think that we went really fast in the race and the pace was really good. The pain in the finger was too much in the first part of the race, but went away more over some laps. I’m happy, I think we’re in a good place and I’m ready to go in the next race.
“I’m working with the finger to be able to improve it for Austin. I expect the best! I think, the more laps we do, the more confident we will be with the bike and, for sure, the better our setup will be.”
This was echoed in his words in the team’s statement:” My strategy was clear, let me use finger and above all to finish the race, because the World Championship is very long. I want to thank the team because they have done a perfect job with the bike over the weekend. “
