Moto2 and Moto3 Jerez qualifying round up

Rins dominates Moto3 despite a crash, Moto2 sees Rabat take his first ever pole.

Moto3 kicked off the qualifying action in Spain and it was business as usual with the three KTM riding Spaniards Rins, Vinales and Salom on the front row.

The trio have also all featured on both of the the previous podiums, setting out a dominant pattern to start the season.

Rins had the most eventful journey to the front row and secured pole for Estrella Galicia despite crashing on just his fourth lap, seconds after team mate Alex Marquez, making for a busy pit box.

He returned still leading the session and reduced his time further to a 1m 46.660 – the only rider to go sub- 1m47.

Marquez wasn’t as fortunate his bike wouldn’t start after his crash at Sito Pons corner, a fair distance from the pits and he starts 22nd.

Maverick Vinales appeared to be back to his cool, controlled best and timed his laps to perfection to seal second on the grid for Team Calvo, with Luis Salom completing the front row for the Red Bull KTM Team.

The second row is very much a Honda affair with Brad Binder the fastest Honda bike in fourth on an Ambrogio Suter, just ahead of the FTR’s of Caretta Technology rider Jack Miller and Go & Fun Gresini’s Niccolo Antonelli in fifth and sixth.

Being just over a second off the lead time leaves Aspar rider Jonas Folger down in seventh, eighth spot is filled by Niklas Ajo of Avant Tecno despite crashing and ninth goes to Jakub Kornfeil, who did not take to the take to the track before today as he was at home sitting exams.

Moto2 was once again lead by three Kalex bikes though this time headed up by a debut pole for Tuenti HP 40 Pons rider Esteve ‘Tito’ Rabat, meaning the class has had a different rider on pole at every race this season.

Rabat’s late lap mean current championship leader Marc VDS man Scott Redding had to settle for second despite leading for most of the session.

They are joined on the front row by Italtrans rider Takaaki Nakagami.

Pol Espargaro, last year’s Jerez winner, finds himslef down in fourth after struggling all weekend alongside Aspar’s Jordi Torres in fifth and Belgian rider Xavier Simeon sixth.

Austn race winner Nico Terol qualifies seventh for Mapfre Aspar.
